When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead ★★★★☆ I am coming to save your friend’s life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter. Miranda’s life isn’t hard to navigate: stay away from the crazy guy on the corner, the grocery store is a safe place, be careful. But then her best friend, Sal, gets punched in the stomach on the walk home - and stops talking to Miranda. After that, the spare apartment key is stolen. And finally, Miranda receives a tiny note on a slip of paper. The notes keep coming, asking Miranda to do things. The worst part? Miranda is totally alone. Miranda’s story is complicated, but Stead unravels it easily and simply. While it might be tough to wrap your head around the time travel (at least at first), the explanation of that bit is perfect and surprisingly made a lot of sense. When You Reach Me is an excellent book, perfect for a quick, easy read. Once you get past the confusion of the time travel, it’s touching and sweet, a great mix of science fiction and everyday reality.
