Silhouette of a Sparrow by Molly Beth Griffin ★★★★☆ In the year 1926, Garnet Richardson is preparing for marriage and a life of homemaking. Her father has just returned from the war with depression, and Garnet’s mother sends her away to Excelsior, Minnesota for the summer in hopes of healing him. Over the summer, Garnet indulges her passion for ornithology and feels the pull of the amusement park and the dance hall, despite the disapproval of her summer guardian. Garnet tries out the freedom of escaping her mother’s watchful eye and gets a job at a hat shop - which leads to a friendship with the daring, rebellious flapper, Isabella. Throughout the story Garnet learns to spread her wings like the birds she so admires and take control of her own life. I loved this book. Griffin does an excellent job of creating a believable story that will draw you in. She doesn’t create an apocalypse-preventing adventure for Garnet; the summer Garnet spends in Excelsior isn’t very far-fetched. And that’s what makes the story so lovable. Garnet is easy to relate to and care about, and the other characters are just as well crafted, from Hannah’s many sides to Isabella’s delicately daring demeanor. It’s not hard to fall in love with Silhouette of a Sparrow’s characters, setting, and brilliant plot line.
